Goal of Tournaments
Tournaments are controlled competitive environments that allow practitioners to display and improve their skills in a safe environment. Although some may think it is all about "who is better", that is only a part of their purpose in the American Taekwondo Association (ATA).
In general, there are basically two types of tournaments: 1. Winning a trophy at any cost, while exclaiming victory and scorning defeat.
2. Competing with a good attitude (possibly winning a trophy) and learning under ideal conditions.
While winning is fun and a goal for all our students that compete, the second is what we in the ATA try to achieve!
Remember that tournaments are not just for a trophy. They allow our members to meet new people, make new friends, put nerves to the test, and display skills. By focusing on these purposes, it is very possible to be happy whether one wins or loses.
Therefore, tournaments are a great opportunity for increasing skills as well as boosting confidence. And, just as importantly, it is possible to learn self control over a temper, or become motivated to react positively instead of negatively to outcomes one does not desire.
For all these reasons and more, tournaments are a vital part of the ATA experience, and one of the most dynamic, fun aspects of our art. An experience that can be shared by the whole family. When competing remember the ATA motto:
“To compete is to win!”
Participation in tournaments is open to any member in good standing with the Southlake Taekwondo and the ATA. Each martial artist competes against other martial artists of the same age and belt (experience) level. This way everyone can participate regardless of age or experience, even if you are a new white belts.
State and World Championships
By participating in the ATA tournaments throughout a competition year students in our State Championship and Leadership Programs earn points towards winning State and World Championship titles. In the past two years Southlake ATA has produced 7 World Title Championships, and numerous State Championships. Click on our Hall of Fame link to see our world champions.
If you have any questions about tournaments please ask any of the staff at Southlake ATA, and we will be happy to explain further the tournament details.
